[Solved] WiFi LoRa 32 V2 TTN joining trouble

I have 2 new ESP32 LoRa 32 V2 boards and a new RAKwireless RAK7258 indoor gateway. The gateway has been set up with TTN using the US 915MHz frequency band. On TTN, I created a new application and 2 new devices. After modifying the Arduino library to use the 915MHz frequency band and to have my application EUI and application key, I flashed each device with its device EUI and the example OTAA_OLED.ino from ESP32_LoRaWAN .

For both devices, I have the same problem. They show “JOINING…” on the OLED forever. On the gateway, I see 90% of packets have CRC_ERR. However, a few packets show CRC_OK and the JSON looks correct as far as I can tell: the EUIs look correct, and there is a field “MType”: “Join Request”. A few seconds later, the gateway shows a transmitted packet with the field “MType”: “Join Accept”. On the TTN console, I can see that the devices were seen a few seconds ago.

This is all that I get, with either device. They are on the same desk with the gateway, so the range is about 1m. I am using the antenna that came with the WiFi LoRa 32 V2 boards. I don’t see any packets in the gateway log coming from any other devices in my region, since LoRa is not very common here.

Why do about 90% of the packets have CRC_ERR when the range is only 1m? How can I get these devices to join successfully?

Edit: The problem was the gateway configuration. It has the wrong Frequency Sub-Band selected. After changing it to channels 0~7, 64, the RSSI reported by the gatway improved to -20dBm, and the Heltec WiFi LoRa 32 V2 joined TTN and sent data OK. I hope this post might help another new LoRa user.

I’ve done some further testing by loading the OLED_LoRa_Sender sketch on one board and the OLED_LoRa_Receiver on the other board. This combination works very well. I did not see any missed messages, and the RSSI reported by the receiver about 1m away from the sender is -30dBm.

By comparison, the best RSSI reported by the RAKwireless gateway was around -100dBm. Unfortunately, these two WiFi LoRa 32 V2 boards and the RAKwireless gateway are the only LoRa devices I have access to right now. What else can I try to do further troubleshooting?

Thanks for this post. With your help, I’m sending Joins and the ChirpStack server is sending JoinAccepts. It looks like the RAK is transmitting the Accepts form looking at the Packet Logger the RSSI for those downlinks are “-”, TX power is “20”, and CRC is “CRC”. I’m running the OTAA_DHT11 sketch on the v2 board. Wondering if you ran into this problem as well or if you or anyone had any advice.

Well, downlink packets showing “-” for RSSI makes sense, since the gateway is transmitting those packets it doesn’t measure an RSSI. TX power of 20 dBm sounds correct, also, assuming you are in a region where that is allowed. Is there something else you are seeing that looks like a problem?

Thanks for validating. This now leads me to think the issue is in the radio configuration. I’ve read on other forums (LMIC) that a similar issue with Clock Error but I don’t see a configuration item for that in the Heltec library implementation. I other thought is the devices Rx freq. Where should I be looking to verify those items are configured correctly?

The devices’ Rx freq should be the same band as their Tx freq, so if the gateway is receiving packets from the devices, then they’re on the right band. Not sure what else to look at on the device side of the link.

The problem of CRC bad may be caused by the gateway, or the frequency offset of the signal sent by the node exceeds the maximum value.

According to previous experience, the crystal oscillator’s oscillating capacitor failure, false soldering, and errors will cause the frequency to be inaccurate.

Can you find some capacitors with 0402 package near your hand? the value between 15~20pF should be OK. Can you try to replace this two capacitors?

I suspect it may be the gateway as well. What can you tell log file?
