I wish to make a couple of smart rat traps that can send a signal to inform me when a rat is caught. This should also inform the user when the battery is low and a change of battery is required. Could someone advise what hardware to purchase to enable this?

just use a cubecell devboard with the interrupt example as base for your sketch.
the CubeCell will send a message when the interrupt (switch in the Rat Trap) is triggered or when you need to change battery.

I heard elsewhere that the smart rats are building a device to trap humans.
