New MeshPocket, Sees Nodes, Can't message anyone

Hi all, new MeshPocket owner here. Went through the whole setup and I can see all kinds of nodes in my area (76, last time I looked). Trying to test by messaging on Channel 0 (the only channel I can see). I can see messages from other nodes, but if i send a test message (literally the word “Test”) all I ever see is “Max Transmission Retries”. Flashed to the latest firmware successfully, see all kinds of new visual goodies on the eInk display, but still cannot send a message.

Before anyone says “antenna problems”, the MeshPocket has an internal antenna that cannot be changed.

Before that, we’d say search the forum …

And those that can help will already know that its got an internal antenna …

And “Max Transmission Retries” is a duty cycle message from the firmware, not hardware related.

I did search and could not find anything relevant. This is probably due to not knowing the terminology, but I did do that before posting a question.
